RESEARCH:

Alternative rock is a type that combines unprocessed emotion with the experimental rock patterns, and is not always tied to the refined sound of mainstream music. Although its popularity has changed over the years, this genre has made a permanent imprint with several bands developing cult followings and international acclaim.

The following are some of the main defining components of the genre:

Personalized Sound
The characteristics of alternative rock are:

  • Emotive music: The songs of the band frequently feature haunting catchy choruses that remain with the listener like in the case of Creep.

  • Clear beats: Drum and bass beats might be repetitive and hypnotic at the same time, producing a disturbing and addictive rhythm of the music.

  • Layers with guitar: The guitar is typically in the forefront, either playing riffs that are distorted or the gentler strums which grasp the changing mood.

Equipment Used

  • Electric guitars: Necessary not only in heavy riffs but also in light melodies.

  • Bass guitars: add dynamic and drive the rhythm on.

  • Drum kits: To establish intensity, gradual rhythms to maniacal smashes.

  • Keyboards/Piano: frequently employed to provide the song with layers of atmosphere or haunting melodies that enhance the emotional coloring of the song.

CONCLUSION:

Alternative rock is mood-based, emotion-driven, and experimental. The genre has remained impactful on underground music and mainstream culture with its blend of gritty guitars, strong lyrics and sound scaping.

WHY I CHOSE THIS GENRE?:

I selected the alternative rock genre since this was the genre that personally spoke to me when no one around me seemed to understand it, I was able to understand it. The majority of my friends were listening to new pop stars, and anything that was popular, but I always tended to listen to such bands as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, and Deftones. This music had acted as a comforter to me and one that made me feel part of something when I felt out of place amongst all the others. Radiohead has a cult following, that relates to their sincere emotional tunes and hence my selection of Creep. Among all the songs, the one that could most clearly address the aforementioned feeling of alienation that I frequently felt was Creep by Radiohead. This was the song which made me understand how music can help reveal the feelings I did not know how to express. I have always related to Nirvana in something in the way as it felt hauntingly simple, but Creep really nailed what I experienced internally. Although other people did not comprehend the reason that I loved this genre, it influenced me. Alternative rock was not an option: it was a part of me.

This is why I picked this genre of music because it comprehended me, and one million other people, too, when we felt like strangers and nobody was on our side.
